CONVERSATORY: TOGETHER FOR CLEANER OCEANS

Yesterday, June 14, and as part of the celebration of World Oceans Day, Red MAMLa through its Social Committee held the Conversatory: "Together for cleaner oceans", an event that was attended by prominent representatives of the Latin American maritime and port sector, who, with their experience and management actively contribute to the implementation of strategies and actions to reduce and mitigate environmental imbalances in the marine ecosystem.

The activity began with welcoming remarks by Elvia Bustanivo, President of Red MAMLa, who commented on the impact of global warming on the oceans, pointing out that "to sustain healthy marine ecosystems free of the carbon dioxide reservoir, they must be protected", urging those present to actively participate in their preservation and care.

Then the moderator of the event, Camila Alejandra Almario, from the Maritime Authority of Colombia and member of the Social Committee of Red MAMLa, gave way to the first presentation of the day by Ms. Nancy Correa, Project Director of the Ministry of Defense of Argentina, who spoke about the work in the field of the study of invasive species and their impact on ships and coastal industries.

Next, Rear Admiral Alejandro López Zenteno, Coordinator of the Sargasso Strategy of the Mexican Ministry of the Navy, referred to the management of Sargasso in the Mexican Oceans, emphasizing that despite the actions taken to prevent its spread "...no country alone will be able to cope with this Sargasso phenomenon, we must prepare ourselves".

The third presentation was given by Leonardo Moreno Rincón, Environmental and Sanitary Engineer, responsible for the management of oceanographic information and marine meteorology at DIMAR-Colombia, who spoke about marine meteorology and its contribution to the decade of the oceans. She also emphasized the care of the oceans by pointing out that "... because of the increase in greenhouse gases, the chemistry of the oceans has been affected, reaching imperishable temperature levels that damage marine ecosystems".

Finally, Katerine Fortich, coastal inspector of the Port Captaincy of Barranquilla (DIMAR- Colombia) and Camila Policaro, Secretary of the Presidency of the Port of DockSud - Argentina, presented videos of the Beach Cleanup held in Playas de Salgar (Colombia) and Puerto Piojo (Argentina).

The closing remarks were in the hands of Marcarena Cladera, Director of the Social Committee of Red MAMLa, who thanked the attendees for participating in the event and especially the panelists for sharing their experience, work and initiatives that, from the public and private sector, contribute to the preservation of our oceans.
