RED MAMLa SUPPORTS PROPOSAL FOR INTERNATIONAL POLICIES TO COMBAT HARASSMENT AND BULLYING IN THE MARITIME INDUSTRY
Red MAMLA as one of the Women's Associations in the Maritime Sector and concerned by the results of studies on the high rate of women who have been and are being victims of intimidation and harassment on board ships, applauds the proposal presented by the Republic of Panama, France, ITF and ICS to the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization at its 105th Session.
During the course of the Session, the proposal was supported by many Member States and Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations and therefore, the joint ILO-IMO tripartite working group was tasked to consider addressing this scourge of bullying and different types of harassment in the maritime industry.
Likewise, it was requested to work on the development of legislation and mechanisms to address this issue, including the launching of awareness campaigns by relevant stakeholders as a way to address this issue faced by women in the maritime sector and all seafarers on board ships.
Red MAMLa urges Member States in the region as well as all IMO Member States to support this initiative within the work of the ILO-IMO tripartite working group.
