CSW69: URGENT ACTION FOR A MORE EQUAL FUTURE FOR ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS

From March 10-21, 2025, the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) celebrated a historic milestone in the struggle for women's rights. This year marked 30 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most progressive blueprint ever for advancing women's rights and achieving gender equality. Despite the advances made, progress on women's rights remains slow and fragile, and the MAMLA Network joins the call to accelerate action and bring about real change in the lives of all women and girls around the world.

During the event “For ALL Women and Girls: The Beijing+30 Action Agenda,” held on March 12 at UN Headquarters, global leaders and experts joined together to present six key actions that can transform the future of women and girls around the world:

1.    Digital Revolution: Closing the gender digital divide is essential to ensure that women have equal access to emerging technologies. Currently, in less developed countries, only 29% of women are connected to the internet, compared to 41% of men. We advocate for more women in decision-making roles in technology.

2.    Freedom from Poverty: Public policies should focus on care systems to free women from the burden of unpaid work.

3.    Zero Violence: Gender-based violence remains one of the greatest threats to women worldwide. Initiatives such as the European Union's “Spotlight Initiative” are essential to eradicate gender-based violence, but much remains to be done, especially in regions such as Africa and Latin America..

4.    Full and Equal Participation in Decision-Making: Gender equality in decision-making is critical to ensure that policies and laws actually benefit women and girls. In many countries, women are still a minority in parliaments and in leadership positions.

5.    Peace and Security: Women are key to building peace. Throughout the world, their participation in peace and security processes must be more active and visible.

Climate Justice: Climate change disproportionately affects women and girls, especially in vulnerable communities. The fight for climate justice must be inclusive, recognizing and funding women's unique contributions to environmental protection.

CSW69 was the stage where governments, activists and civil society organizations reaffirmed their commitment to transform these actions into concrete and sustainable policies.

Progress is possible, but it requires immediate action. The decisions taken during this session will influence the future of all women and girls around the world. Despite the achievements of the past 30 years, there are still monumental challenges, from gender-based violence to the climate crisis, that threaten to roll back the gains made.

Red MAMLa reaffirms its commitment to gender equality in the maritime sector, and to promoting inclusive policies that give women a voice and leadership in decision-making on maritime safety, environmental protection and economic development in the region.

The change is now. Together and together we can create a more equitable, inclusive and sustainable maritime sector. The decisions made at CSW69 are an important step, but the work remains urgent.
