MAMLAS AT THE HELM: LEAVING WAVES IN THE SEA FROM THE SOUTH OF THE WORLD

In the southern corner of the American continent, is located our Member State Chile, where T2 ° LT Catherine Gonzalez Pizarro, Alternate Member of Red MAMLa exercises his role as "Protector of the Sea" in the Directorate General of Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine - DIRECTEMAR. There, according to the organization's mission, he watches over the safety of human life at sea and navigation and the care of the aquatic environment in the sea and navigable rivers of the country.

Although in her professional beginnings she ventured into the area of social communication, studying journalism, her restless spirit and passion for the sea led her to wear the blue uniform and join the Chilean Navy in 2010.

Catherine González Pizarro is part of the fourth generation of women to enter the Arturo Prat Naval School, who in 2007 enlisted for the first time in the ranks of the Chilean Navy, which was a very important milestone in the inclusion of women in the Armed Forces.

In her novel career within this institution, she has worked in various professional areas, among which she has excelled in the following positions and activities:

  • Chief Officer of Maritime Interests in the jurisdictions of the Port Captaincies of San Antonio and Antofagasta, between the years 2015 and 2019.
     
  • Second Commander of the LSG Antofagasta during the year 2022, previously he had served as Pilot Officer of the same, during the year 2021.
     
  • During the year 2023, by special invitation of the Port of San Antonio, integrates the initiative "Mujeres de Puerto: Mujeres Valientes", dedicated to highlight women who work in the maritime sector.

Since 2019, she has also had an outstanding participation in our Association, when the Director General of the Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine, Vice Admiral Ignacio Mardones appoints her as Alternate Member of the Chilean Maritime Authority to the MAMLa Network, where her participation has included the following milestones:

  • As Alternate Member she attends the II Regional Conference held in Colombia, where the statutes of Red MAMLa are signed.
     
  • Between 2019 and 2022, he actively participates in the Committee of RREE and International Cooperation (CRECI), assuming the Direction of the latter during the year 2023. 
     
  • As part of the Executive Committee of MAMLa Network, participates in the First World Conference of WIMAs, organized by the IMO and held at the Headquarters, in London, England, as part of the celebration of the "International Day of Women in the Maritime Sector" (May, 2023).
     
  • Likewise, she participated in the V General Assembly and VI Regional Conference of the MAMLa Network held in the Member State of Guatemala, where she reported on the management of the CRECI Committee and the Member State of Chile.

In her continuous navigation in the maritime sector, at the beginning of this year, she is appointed by the Commander in Chief of the Navy to serve as Commander of the General Services Boat "San Antonio", leading a crew of 10 people, a position she will hold during the year 2024.
