THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN LEADERS: IN ENGINE ROOMS, BRIDGES AND BOARD ROOMS

In commemoration of International Women's Day, the International Maritime Organization joined Maritime SheEO and Wista International in hosting the Webinar: "The Next Generation Of Women Leaders: In Engine Rooms, Bridges and Board Rooms" to celebrate the launch of Maritime SheEO's new Leadership Accelerator Program for 2022.

The opening remarks were delivered by IMO Secretary General Kitack Lim, who began his speech by referring to the transition that the maritime sector is experiencing towards a more sustainable future, and the efforts required to decarbonize, increase efficiency and combat climate change. He was emphatic in pointing out that this transition cannot take place without diversity in leadership, since: "...women leaders are vital to the future of the maritime sector, we must take steps to make the sector more welcoming and support women in their career path..."

In closing, he referred to IMO's work towards the achievement of SDG5, the efforts being made through the 8 WIMAs that have been created, and the active participation that Member States have had with IMOGEN. He also expressed IMO's satisfaction in sponsoring 30 places for women around the world to participate in the SheEO Maritime Leadership Program.

The event, which was broadcast live on IMO's YouTube channel, was also attended by Sanjam Sahi Gupta, Founder of Maritime SheEO, Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, President of WISTA International, and Guy Platten, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping, among other leading industry figures.

Also present were the women selected to participate in the Leadership Program. Among them we would like to highlight 2 women who fill us with pride, since they are Members of Red MAMLa: our Alternate Member Estefanía Osorio, Head of the Department of Naval Inspection of the Mexican Maritime Authority and our Honorary Member Anays Berrocal, Alternate Representative of Panama to the International Maritime Organization, to whom we would like to extend our congratulations and best wishes for success in this new challenge they are starting.
