WORKSHOP IMO/UMM: IMPACT OF UNDERWATER NOISE ON THE OCEANS

On October 15-16, 2024, more than 200 participants from over 50 countries gathered for a joint workshop organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the World Maritime University (WMU) on policies and strategies to reduce underwater noise. This event, supported by the Schlüter Foundation, placed special emphasis on the challenges and solutions for developing countries and highlighted the urgency of addressing the negative impacts of human activities, such as shipping, offshore construction and energy exploration, on marine ecosystems.

The workshop was divided into four key sessions: the impact of underwater noise from a multidisciplinary perspective, global and regional policy frameworks, practical mitigation solutions and specific challenges for developing countries. Experts from IMO, WMU and other leading organizations such as NOAA, FAO and the Vancouver Port Authority participated in the discussions. These sessions underscored the need for collaborative action that combines public policy, technological advances and multi-stakeholder participation.

The event was notable for its inclusive approach, bringing together representatives from GloNoise project countries, including Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, India and South Africa, as well as experts from various academic and government institutions. Interactive roundtables provided a space to discuss challenges and solutions, including technology transfer and the implementation of sustainable practices in the most constrained countries.

Key messages from the workshop highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach to underwater noise mitigation, which affects both marine biodiversity and the coastal communities that depend on it. Conclusions pointed to the establishment of sound regulatory frameworks, the development of innovative technologies and international cooperation as key pillars to reduce the impact of these activities. This collective effort strengthens the global maritime community's commitment to ocean conservation and environmental sustainability.
