A TOUCHING TRIBUTE FROM THE NATIONAL NAVAL PREFECTURE OF URUGUAY RECOGNIZES THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN MARITIME

In an emotional ceremony attended by the President of the Republic, civil and military authorities, diplomats and social representatives, the National Naval Prefecture of Uruguay celebrated a new anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to maritime safety, environmental protection and service to society. The institution, which was born with the homeland in 1829, highlighted the silent work of its personnel throughout the national territory, as well as its evolution towards a modern and specialized organization with international responsibilities.

During the ceremony, the historic figure of Colonel Pablo Zufriategui, the first Port Captain of the Free Fatherland, and the fundamental role of the Captaincy of the Port of Montevideo in the origins of the Republic were recalled. Milestones such as the drafting of the first port regulations and the international projection of the port, today considered the cradle of the nation and the starting point of the Prefecture as a key institution of the Uruguayan State, were also reviewed.

The Prefectura Nacional Naval, as the country's maritime authority, is responsible for implementing the instruments of the International Maritime Organization, inspecting ships and terminals, and actively participating in international committees on safety, training, environmental protection and pollution control. It is also a member of the Regional Operational Cooperation Network of Maritime Authorities of South America (ROCRAM), reinforcing cooperation for regional maritime control.

One of the highlights of the day was the recognition that Rear Admiral José ELIZONDO pointed out during his speech, to the role of the Network of Women Maritime Authorities of Latin America (MAMLA Network), currently chaired by the Uruguayan Officer, CN (CP) Macarena Cladera. “...This network, made up of women in the maritime field, promotes women's professional development under the principles of training, visibility, recognition and empowerment...”, he said.

The role of the Prefecture in the fight against economic crime, money laundering and illegal fishing was also highlighted, acting as a specialized arm in criminal investigations within the jurisdiction of the National Navy. With a territorial coverage of more than 2,600 km of coastline and a crew of more than 1,300, the institution maintains its validity and operability thanks to its highly committed and constantly trained personnel.

Finally, homage was paid to all prefecturians, past and present, whose vocation of service has left a deep mark in the history of the country. In the words of the final message, it was recalled that no institutional goal is possible without human effort, reaffirming faith in the future as the basis of the daily commitment of this great naval family.
