CRUISES: THE INDUSTRY THAT LEADS WITH PURPOSE
My name is Lucas Bueno, I am from Argentina and I am currently the Trade Marketing Manager of Royal Caribbean International for Latin America and the Caribbean. It is an honor to have been invited by the MAMLa Network to talk about this great industry and the impact it has on the world. Early in my career, I had the opportunity to work in different tourism sectors such as agencies and airlines, but I was also a crew member of Royal for almost 10 years. All these years of experience have made me grow personally and professionally. I would like to share through this article, my internal and external point of view of the great cruise industry, but especially the leadership of Royal Caribbean International.
Great vacations always start with great employees and every day, our employees around the world go the extra mile to deliver exceptional vacations to our guests. Our leadership team strives to maintain a work environment that reinforces collaboration, motivation and innovation every day, so that this continues to happen and results in the satisfaction of our guests.
We have been an industry leader for more than 52 years in offering cruise vacations because we provide a variety of products and services that meet the diverse needs of our international guests, which is why continuous improvement is fundamental to our growth. Another thing that sets us apart is ethics, doing the right thing, which is one of our most important values and what has set us apart; this helps create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all our guests, communities, business partners and employees.

At Royal Caribbean International, we are always thinking and looking at the big picture to know how best to "lead with purpose." With these pillars in mind, we have set goals to strengthen our efforts and create a more diverse, equitable and inclusive ecosystem. Values such as compassion to create a dialogue between the company and community leaders, represent humanitarian change to improve the community, and equity to strengthen our ties to leadership. Celebrating, supporting and championing initiatives and policies that seek equality among guests, LGBTQ+ employees and other minorities is another way we seek to make everyone feel a part of and respected within this great community.
Diversity is a word that encompasses a lot, and that is something we breathe every day; it can be seen in the approximately 85,000 employees, 60% of whom are of different nationalities from around the world. Within this we have programs such as employee resource groups, autism-friendly cruises, empowerment of women in maritime careers, among others. Royal Caribbean International's 26 cruise ships have and continue to sail the world's waters, bringing billions of dollars to local economies and supporting numerous businesses - from small to large. In the same way, we are also moving closer to our sustainability goals every day, because for Royal Caribbean, respect for the ocean is not an option, but a way of life, as we have a responsibility to guests, employees and the communities we visit. The ocean is at the heart of our business and connects us all, in every aspect.
These goals are of crucial importance to our company, to my values and to the communities around the world that our ships visit every day, not to mention our guests, of course. They are all part of our awareness, and we are all driven by a clear commitment to protect and conserve the environments and communities with which we interact. The oceans are the major provider of food, economy, transportation and, ultimately, life to millions of people around the world. They also provide oxygen to every organism that inhabits our planet. That's why it is our responsibility to help protect and conserve the oceans and coastal communities that provide us with so many wonders. Our innovation group has worked hard on this, and we currently have ships under construction that will be completely powered by liquefied natural gas, reducing the impact on the environment.
In closing, I would like to say that Royal Caribbean is leading the industry with purpose.
