INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE
The Latin American Women in Maritime Association (Red MAMLa) joins the commemoration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, an important celebration to highlight the role of women in science and technology. This day, established on December 22, 2015 by the UN General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/70/212, underscores the importance of recognizing and strengthening the role of women and girls in these fundamental fields for global development.
February 11 is the designated day for this celebration, which is organized by UNESCO and UN Women in collaboration with various institutions and civil society partners. The main objective is to promote the participation and equal access of women and girls in science, and to remove the barriers that have historically limited their full inclusion in scientific and technological disciplines.
Promoting gender equality, one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 5), is a priority for UNESCO, which emphasizes the need to empower young women and promote their education in science and technology. These efforts aim to empower them to express their ideas, thereby contributing to sustainable development and peace in the world.
The theme of this year's celebration is "Closing the Gender Gap in Science," which is a global call to continue working toward equal opportunities. Red MAMLA's initiatives reinforce the regional commitment to ensure that women and girls play a prominent role in scientific progress, guaranteeing their active and equal participation in a field that still requires profound changes in terms of inclusion.
