The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP28 has opened with a resounding call to accelerate collective action on climate change. The conference takes place in what is already known to be the hottest year on record, and as the impacts of the climate crisis wreak unprecedented havoc on lives and livelihoods around the world.

Ms. Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou (Cyprus), former President of the Women's International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA International), has been selected as the recipient of the first-ever IMO Gender Equality Award.
The IMO Assembly holds its thirty-third session from November 27 to December 6, 2023 and is open to the 175 Member States of IMO and three Associate Members. The session is also attended by observers from intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.
